Walt Whitman uses the symbolism of captain and father to represent the President Abraham Lincoln.  Lincoln was the father of America during the Civil War. He truly rescued the nation from utter destruction, ruination, and disintegration.  He delivered America to unity and peace once again.  Lincoln is captain of the ship (the people of America), he is the leader, provider, and peacemaker of America.  As a father takes care of his children, Lincoln took care of the children of America, and as a captain guides his ship to safety, Lincoln guided America to unity.  So you see the symbolism of captain and father fit perfectly for Abraham Lincoln-a wonderful captain for our country.
